A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 24 February 2026) informs: "Bertem, Sint-Pietersbandenkerk. Bertem boasts one of the best-preserved and best-studied Romanesque churches in Belgium. It is a typical example of rural Ottonian architecture in the former Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The building is located in a remote corner of the village, which was typical for places of worship dating from the Frankish period. Before 800, Bertem was given to the Abbey of Saint-Peter at Corbie by (Saint) Adelard. The abbey may have established a court church there as early as the 8th century, with St. Peter ad Vincula as its patron. 1112: Odo, Bishop of Cambrai, confirms that the church belonged to Corbie Abbey. Until the 13th century, Corbie Abbey exercised complete authority in Bertem. From the 13th century onward, the lords of Heverlee acted as guardians of the abbey. In 1562, the abbey sold its rights to the lords of Berthi. The earliest stone construction is believed to have occurred between 1000 and 1050. This is suggested by the square chancel with a semicircular apse, typical of the oldest Romanesque buildings in Belgium. Until 1711, the tower had no external entrance, it served a defensive function. The church was repeatedly modified, but by the end of the 19th century it had fallen into serious disrepair, and plans were made to demolish it. This was rejected by the Royal Commission for Monuments, and the construction of a new church was also rejected. Finally, in 1934, an archaeological restoration was carried out, which removed the modifications from previous centuries.
Baptismal registers date from 1598. The baroque limestone baptismal font decorated with gadroons was ordered in Nivelles in 1656.
