A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 25 January 2026) informs: "Barsale, Bersela, Beersle, Beersel-op-den- Bosch, Beersel. Before 1008, Beersel belonged to the bishops of Liège. Later, it was the property of the Berthouts, lords of Mechelen. In 1151, the village was first mentioned as Barsale. in 1298, the Berthouts ceded the tiths of the parish to the Pitsenburg commandery of the Teutonic Order at Mechelen. In 1309, it already was an independent parish belonging to the diocese of Cambrai. Little is known about the church's early architectural history. It was described as a small church, the oldest in the region. The church's late Gothic tower is the oldest part and dates from the end of the 14th century.
In the 16th century, Spanish troops were stationed in Beerzel, using the church tower as a lookout point to survey the region. The Eighty Years' War raged fiercely, and the region was ravaged in turn by various factions. By the end of the 16th century, very little remained of Beerzel. The church was possibly destroyed by the Calvinists around 1580. It took until 1608 for it to be rebuilt. The naves and choir were remodelled in a classicist style in 1767. Through various construction phases, Gothic and Baroque styles were combined. Baptismal registers from 1609 onwards. Baroque limestone baptismal font on a baluster column. Limestone base with illegible chiselled text, 1614. Brass lid by Julius De Cuyper. Wrought iron lifting mechanism by J.B. Stevens. https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/35604".
