Baptismal font of the 15th century in this church listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/78737] [accessed 15 February 2026]: "doopvont [...] hardsteen [...] Date: 1401 - 1500 [...] hoogte: 104 cm". The entry for this church in the Belgian Wikipedia [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Magdalenakerk_(Kortijs)] [accessed 15 February 2026] reports a baptismal font, possibly of the 15th century, in it : "het doopvont is mogelijk 15e-eeuws."
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 30 January 2026) informs: "Corticulum, Curtis (1242), Cortys (1468), Cortis (1470- 1661), Cortilz, Courtilz, Cortisse, Corthys. The burial mound, or tumulus of the Three Tombs proves the presence of Gallo-Romans on Kortijs's territory.
Kortijs was first mentioned in written sources in 1232: Egide, son of Gobert, Lord of Orbays, confirms his donation of Curtis to the Abbey of Nonnen-Mielen. The village formed an allodial lordship subject to the court of Liège. The originally Romanesque church served as a quarter chapel of Montenaken and was probably established as an “eigenkirche” by the local lord. The abbey of Val-Notre-Dame in Antheit became the tithe collector and acquired a quarter of the territory in the late 15th century. 1634: there was no baptismal font, the baptismal church was Montenaken. Although the priest of Kortijs was allowed to administer all other sacraments. The priest points out the danger for young children during the winter due to the great distance. The bishop does not agree. In 1798, the priest of Kortijs starts performing baptisms himself, even though he was not authorized to do so, because the priest of Montenaken had fled the French revolutionaries. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a neo-Gothic building dating from 1892-1893. Nothing is know about the older church. ith the exception of the baptismal font, the church furnishings date from the 19th century.
Baptismal records start in 1797. Although literature mentions the 14th and 15th century, this is a 16th century font, that probably started out as a stoup, and was promoted to baptismal font in 1798. https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/78737. Church is for sale and stands empty, whereabouts of font unknown."
