Baptismal font made up of several unrelated parts in the 19th century(?): a hemispherical basin, a modern(?) stem and the base of a cemetery(?) cross, listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10014702] [accessed 18 January 2026]:"fonts baptismaux [...] Date: 1891 - 1900 [...] pierre [...] hauteur: 118 cm".
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 15 January 2026) informs: "In 965, a charter by emperor Otto, confirming the possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Guislain, mentions the parish of "Basiacum", Baseium, Basium, Baisiu... The seigneury is documented in the 13th century. Its castle was captured and destroyed in 1364 by Albert de Bavière, acting on behalf of the Count of Hainaut. It was again razed by Jacqueline de Bavière around 1400. In 1578, during the Wars of Religion, the Duke of Alençon again destroyed the castle and the village. In 1655, the troops of Louis XIV, at war with the Spanish, set fire to the village once more, including the church and the castle. In 1794, a fire destroyed almost the entire village. The church: no information on the old buildings; was depicted in a painting by Adrien de Montigny between 1596 and 1611. Tithes were collected by the Abbey of Crespin. Priests known since 1600. In 1759: reconstruction of the church. Significant enlargement in 1830.
Composite baptismal font. Base of a funerary cross, column probably recent, octagonal basin which appears ancient.
