Church listed in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ4016857783]: "Formerly known as: Church of St Peter CHURCH STREET Monkwearmouth. Formerly separate churches of St Peter and St Mary. Monastic church, now parish church. 674-5 first church, of which survive west wall and 2-storey gabled W porch which is now the lower stages of the tower, for Benedict Biscop the founder. Upper stages of tower before 1000. Rest of church by end C14. Nave and chancel much altered in C19: chancel arch removed early C19." [no font listed]. The present font, located at the west end of the north aisle, appears modern, probably 19th-century; it consists of an octagonal basin raised on a columnar base, all in very dark or black marble (?). [[NB: there is a large unidentified rectangular vessel outside illustrated in a 10 May 2019 digital photograph by Stanley John James [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Peters_Church_2019.jpg] [accessed 9 November 2025], but it is probably unrelated to the mising Anglo-Saxon font].
