Two related(?) objects located in the base of the tower space inside this church are noted and illustrated in the Italian Wikipedia entry [https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegiata_di_Santa_Maria_Assunta_(Camaiore)] [accessed 30 June 2025], an octagonal tub-font and a rectangular font said to be of about the same period: "All'ingresso della chiesa, in un vano situato alla base del campanile, si trova il fonte battesimale a pozzo, con rilievi del 1387 e una vasca rettangolare risalente alla stessa epoca." The object described as "fonte battesimal a pozzo", roughly translated as well-head shaped font, is octagonal with tapering sides below a prominent upper rim; it has a very short octagonal plinth; the sides of the basin are decorated with large human figures standing in different positions, one carries a four-legged animal on his shoulders, another uses a large pestle, another appears to hold his pudenda, etc. There is no cover present nor is there any evidence of anchorings around the upper basin.
The second object mentioned and illustrated in the Wikipedia entry above is harder to relate to a baptismal function, although BSI has catalogued several such re-purposings of former sarcophagi as fonts. The decoration on the front side of an old man and three young children may also suggest its original function as a sarcophagus, whatever use it was re-purposed for. It is possible that it served here as a font until the late-14th century font was introduced.
