Church Notes: chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist built 1142 -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00082483]: "12e siècle ; 16e siècle [...]
Monolithic baptismal font of square desing inside and out; the south side of the basin [present location, 2021] has a pair of shallow-carved pointed arch or windows, while the east side is totally plain; the lower part of the block has a pointed arch cut out on each side; there is evidence of cuttings made to the upper basin rim to accommodate cover anchorings but there is no cover present now [2021]. [NB: this must be the font listed in Corblet (1881-1882) as "Nerlandes" -- cf. BSI entry]. A holy-water stoup in the interior of the priory church is illustrated in GP / Grand Périgueux [https://www.tourisme-grandperigueux.fr/blog/le-prieure-de-merlande/] [accessed 6 April 2025]. The entry for this church in Sébastien Colpin [https://www.photosdesebastiencolpin.fr/2025/03/le-prieure-de-merlande-un-magnifique-patrimoine-religieux-au-coeur-de-la-foret.html] [accessed 6 April 2025] notes: "La cuve baptismale placée à l’entrée est romane." [NB: one of Colpin's photographs of the interior of the church shows two objects: an octagonal pedestal holy-water stoup standing at the west end of the centre aisle by the west entranceway; the other, a square tub stands in the northwest corner; this font appears to match the description and illustration that Corblet (1881-1882) locates in 'Nerlandes', Dordogne -- cf. BSI entry for Nerlandes]. Mérimée has a listing for the stoup [ref.: PA00082483]: "Eglise, bénitier". The stoup is illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: APMH00032180]
