Font Notes:
The entry for this church in the German Wikipedia [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienkirche_(Büdingen)] [accessed 19 January 2025] notes that the Reformation introduced changes to this church but that the furnishings, including the old baptismal font, remain unchanged ["Die Einrichtung der Kirche, wie die Altäre, die Heiligen und die Taufsteine, blieb durch die Einführung der lutherischen Lehre unverändert."] A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 11 October 2024) notes: "On the Facebook website of the city, it is said that the font is more than 750 years old. Its provenance is unknown, it was discovered in a garden in the Taunus. A prince-bishop of Würzburg intervened and the font was bought. It was restored by stone mason Hans-Werner Arntz. It stands in the church since 1982." The font now in use in Marienkirche Büdingen appears to be monolithic, octagonal and made of reddish sandstone; there is a row of round-arched windows all around the upper sides of the basin, sixteen in total; below them vertical piping ends in motifs and symbols; the lower volume is narrower and also polygonal. There is a metal insert in the basin; modern? No cover present.
