view of church exterior - gravestone - lion
[source: DK]

Described and illustrated in Hein (1966: 25-26 and fig. 20) as a granite baptismal font of the Romanesque period and attributed to Horder's workshop. The upper rim of the basin is ornamented with a rope motif all around; below, a band of acanthus vine is framed by a thin triple torus, top and bottom; the underbowl is plain except for the double-rope motif at the centre ring, which is part of the upper block of the font. The lower block, the base has a round upper part ornamented with a plain roll moulding; roll mouldings frame the panels of the base sides; at the upper end of the angles there appears to be a foliage (?) motif in each. Listed and illustrated in Danmarks Kirker [http://danmarkskirker.natmus.dk/aarhus/vejlby-kirke/] [accessed 18 December 2024] as a baptismal font made of two kinds of granite: the basin is a reddish coarse stone, the base greyish and of finer grain; polished and cleaned in 1831; paint stripped 1854; varnished in 1875. The DK entry describes the baptismal dish as made between 1550 and 1575, provenance is south German.
