Church Notes: church of the Franciscan convent built between 1571 and 1582; affected by earthquakes it has been restored and re-built several times since
Baptismal font consisting of a roughly cylindrical basin raised on a round pedestal base; there is a rope moulding decorating the upper rim of the basin, a roll moulding on the lower end, anothr moilding, much damaged to discern the type at the bottom of the underbowl; the base is decorated with a pronounced roll mouding. The stone of the font appears to be one of volcanic origin. The style of the stoup would fit in the Romanesque font designs of Europe but it is quite likely of the period of the founding of the Franciscan church itself, the mid-to-late 16th century. No cover present. [cf. BSI entry Santiago Atitlan No. 2 for the holy-water stoup in this church]
