The entry for this Mapledurham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SU7321/mapledurham/] [accessed 17 September 2024] gives a recorded population of 81 households in 1086 in it, "Households: 43 villagers. 26 smallholders. 12 slaves"; it also mentions a church in it. The Phillimore reference given is "Hampshire 1,8". The entry for Buriton in the Victoria County History, A History of the County of Hampshire: Volume 3 [https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/hants/vol3/pp85-93] [accessed 17 September 2024] notes: "About a mile north-north-west of Buriton is West Mapledurham, known in modern days as Mapledurham only, (fn. 5) the property of the Legge family." The footnote reads: "The old manor house, a large gabled building approached by an avenue of elms, was pulled down during the last century, when the present farm-house was built on the site." The VCH entry (ibid.) makes several references to "the church of Mapledurham", among them: "There was a church in MAPLEDURHAM (afterwards Buriton) at the time of the Domesday Survey; (fn. 143) by 1291 the church with a chapel, probably the chapel of Petersfield, was worth £46 13s. 4d. annually, (fn. 144) and by the reign of Henry VIII the rectory of Buriton was worth yearly £336 8s. [...] In 1337 the church of Mapledurham was described as of the bishop's patronage"; "In 1265 Walter de Lichelad, rector of the church of Mapledurham, and the abbot and convent of Dureford, were parties to a deed concerning tithes in the parish of Mapledurham".
