The entry for this church in Inventaris Onroerend Erfgoed [https://inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/23291] [accessed 15 September 2024] reports a Romanesque baptismal font in it: "Romaanse doopvont". The entry in the Dutch Wikipedia [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-Petrus_en_Pauluskerk_(Rumbeke)] [accessed 15 September 2024] mentions a Romanesque baptismal font of ca. 1200 in this church: "Het romaans doopvont is van ongeveer 1200." Listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/42077] [accessed 15 September 2024]: "doopvont [...] Romans [...] Date: 1200 (ca) - 1200 (ca) [...] steenhouwen[techniek], slaan[metaal]". [NB: the date and characteristics of this font are challenged below, where it is suggested that some of the motifs on the font are later re-carvings].
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 8 September 2024) gives information on the complicated and confusing history of the present font im Rumbeke, and related issues: "Rumbeke was an important parish in the past, from which Oekene and Kachtem split off in 1143. This means that a church already existed at Rumbeke at that time. Between the 13th and 15th centuries a stone church was built that contained both Romanesque and Gothic elements. The church was severely damaged during the religious wars in the 16th century. The building was repaired, but the tower was only rebuilt in wood. A new baptismal chapel was built in 1749. In 1788, a new polished stone baptismal font was bought from Pieter Dubois at Bruges for the price of 204 livres. The reason is unknown. When the reverend Leopold Slosse became the priest of the parish (1896), he organised a complete liturgical re-equipment of the church. Because he was art historian, he managed to collect various antique items in order to recreate a historical setting of the church interior. He also had many modifications made to the church building, for example a new baptismal chapel, a new stone tower,… Reference : “Uittreksel uit de Handelingen van de Koninklijke Geschied- en Oudheidkundige Kring van Kortrijk”, Deel XX.
Pastor Slosse not only searched the castle attics at Rumbeke (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasteel_van_Rumbeke), but also those of the castle of Hemsrode near Anzegem (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasteel_Hemsrode) where the sister of the lord of Rumbeke lived; there he found by chance a very old font that he managed to dismantle and have transferred to Rumbeke. He noted it in the Memoriale Rumbecanum. It had been in the castle of Hemsrode for years. On 24 August 1897 the old font arrived from the church of Anzegem. It must date from the mid-1200s. In his historical notes on Anzegem, Pastor Slosse described his discovery in more detail: until 60 years ago, a remarkable Romanesque font stood in the church of Anzegem, the likes of which can be found here and there in Normandy. The basing rests on a screwed support and a square base with mermaid heads.
With regards to the font listed in KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/42077] [cf. supra], Pol Herman adds: "This looks like a Mosan Romanesque baptismal font. However, Jean-Claude Ghislain doubts it, he thinks that it could be a composition of neo-Romanesque features. The design of the base is not Mosan, but Tournai-style. The arcades on the square basin are gothic. The figurines and inscriptions inside the arcades seem late. The material has not yet been identified : limestone, sandstone,… ? Although it is mentioned in many documents, the font has never been studied. Schlosse found it in the castle of Hemsrode, but no one can prove the link to the church of Anzegem. The modern and insignificant font of Rumbeke (1788) [cf. ImagesArea] went to the new parish of Wildenburg and made way for the Romanesque one of Anzegem. The Rumbeke church was heavily damaged during the first world war, the baptismal chapel was obliterated. Miraculously, the 'Romanesque' font survived amidst the rubble."
