Font Notes:
Baptismal font made of limestone in 1656 [cf. infra] described and illustrated in Evangelisch-lutherische Kirchengemeinde Mascherode in Braunschweig [https://www.kirche-mascherode.de/kirche/taufstein] [accessed 30 August 2024]: "Der Taufstein aus Kalkstein stammt aus dem Jahr 1656. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde er dem Vaterländischen Museum in Braunschweig (heute: Braunschweiger Landesmuseum) zur Verfügung gestellt, 1977 renoviert und und in die Kirche zurückgebracht. Er zeigt einen Hirtenknaben mit Siegesfahne. Unklar ist, ob er Johannes den Täufer oder aber Jesus als Kind darstellen soll." An entry in the DIO [Deutsche Inschriften Online] [https://www.inschriften.net/en/braunschweig-kloster-riddagshausen-und-eingemeindete-doerfer/einleitung/6-nicht-aufgenommene-inschriften.html] [accessed 30 August 2024] however, states that this font had been wrongly dated earlier to 1641 and that the actual inscription is 1654: "Mascherode, Kirche: Der im Kunstdenkmälerinventar mit der Jahreszahl 1641 angegebene Taufstein [...] trägt in Wirklichkeit die Inschrift 1 ‎// 6 ‎// 5 ‎// 4." The entry for this church in the GEDBAS [https://wiki.genealogy.net/Kirche_von_Mascherode] [accessed 30 August 2024] informs that the earlier altar, confessional and font were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and later replaced: "Der Innenraum der Kirche entspricht heute nicht mehr dem Originalzustand. Altar, Beichtstuhl und Taufstein wurden im Dreißigjährigen Krieg zerstört und später ersetzt." It further notes (ibid.) that the new font was installed in the church in the summer of 1654, that it was removed to the museum in Braunsweig in the late-19th century, and that it was restored in 1977 and returned to the church: "Der zweite Taufstein wurde im Sommer 1654[2] in die Kirche gebracht, aber Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts dem Braunschweiger Museum zur Verfügung gestellt. 1977 holte man ihn wieder in die Gemeindekirche zurück. Da er einige Jahre im Freien gestanden hatte, musste er zunächst restauriert werden." The font consists of a round moulded basin raised on a pedestal base; the young-shepherd figure with lamb and processional cross mentioned in the source [cf. supra] is actually part of the cover, not the font itself; the cover is round with a low dome decorated with scroll ribs topped with human heads, the shepherd figure as finial.
