Holy-water stoup listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/68392] [accessed 14 August 2024]: "zandsteen [...] Romaans [...] Date: 1101 - 1300 [...] hoogte: 15 cm".
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 4 July 2024) informs: "There is a 13th-century bluestone stoop, which was originally a Romanesque mortar of the Poilvache type", and gives the reference to the KIK-IRPA entry above, which identifies the stone as sandstone instead. The "Poilvache" type of mortar mentioned by PH above refers to a type of medieval mortar identified and studied in Geert Vergrugghe et al., Late medieval stone mortars in the Meuse valley : trade up to Danemark? [https://inrap.hal.science/hal-02442181v1/file/AGSTR2019-poster_Meuse2.ai.pdf] [accessed 14 August 2024] and his Deux mortiers en pierre dans la forteresse de Poilvache avec une nouvelle attestation mosane d’une production décorée à diffusion jusqu’au Danemark? [https://cahiersdelampmm.be/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/mortiers.pdf] [accessed 14 August 2024]. This stoup at Kaulille fits very well with the type noted in Verbrugghe [cf. supra] and could very well have been a mortar originally, re-purposed as a "wijwatervat" and wall-mounted in the church, a nont uncommon occurrence indeed.
