The present font in use is modern, a dodecagonal basin decorated with a blind arcade of trefoiled arches, raised on an octagonal perdestal base; it was probably introduced when the church was re-built in 1869 after a fire [NB: we have no information on the church of the medieval church here].
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 1 July 2024) informs: "The benedictine abbey of Sint-Andries was founded on the 22nd of February 1100, and ratified by a charter by the count Robrecht II of Flanders. The first mention of the Romanesque church is in 1117. The abbey church also served as parish church. In 1240, a partition wall was built inside the church, to separate the parishioners from the monks. In the 13th century, a new church was built. It suffered from religious and other wars. The abbey was abolished in 1797. The church was destroyed by lightning in 1869, only the tower was still standing. A new neo-Gothic church was built. A new baptismal font was bought. It is interesting that the style is Gotlandic “paradise”. Very unusual for this part of Europe."
