Scene Description: Source caption: "Church of St Mary Magdalene, Fifehead Magdalen - Old Font. This old font stands beneath the west window. The Purbeck marble bowl is fifteenth century and it stands on an eighteenth century fluted pedestal. Church records show that the wooden cover for the font was made by the parish clerk in 1774."

There is an entry for Fifehead [Magdalen] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/ST7821/fifehead-magdalen/] [accessed 4 June 2024]; it menions neither priest nor church in it. The British History Online [https://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/dorset/vol4/pp19-21] [accessed 3 June 2024] notes: "Font [...] with octagonal stone bowl with two trefoil-headed panels on each face, 15th century, on gadrooned and fluted baluster-shaped pedestal, with moulded octagonal base and cable moulding at top, early 18th century. Font-cover: of oak, octagonal, with turned finial, 18th century." Listed in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble [polygonal II type]; "stem only remains, reused as a small bowl on top of a modern stone stem". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: ST7828021596] notes: "Parish Church. Nave chancel and tower C14, alterations of C15 and C17, north chapel C17 or C18, alterations of C19 and restoration of 1905 [...] font with small C15 octagonal stone bowl with trefoiled panels on C18 gadrooned and fluted plinth; [...] main font C20".
