The entry for Oostelbeers in the Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren (DBNL) [https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_voo016voor09_01/_voo016voor09_01_0102.php] [accessed 13 May 2024] reports a 13th-century granit basin decorated with four heads now in the Roman Cathlic new church, on a modern masonry base; the original base is still in the old church ["De moderne r.k. kerk bezit: Granieten doopvont (XIII), welker kuip is versierd met vier koppen, op modernen gemetselden voet; de oude zuilvoet bevindt zich nog in de oude kerk."] The entry for this church in CUBRA [http://www.cubra.nl/tilburgsdialect/pierrevanbeek/heemkunde03beerzen.htm] [accessed 13 May 2024] notes that the old Sint-Willibrord church had a remarkable hardstone baptismal font that can now be admired in the new church; It is decorated with four primitively carved bearded heads; somewhat similar fonts are found in Horssen (Maas en Waal), in Fulda (Germany) and in St.-Oedenrode (originally from Lage Mierde, according to pastor J. v.d. Meijden, who also believes that those from Horssen and St.-Oedenrode are of an earlier date than the one in Middelbeerse; it fuerther notes that, according to a local legend, the baptismal font was buried in the ground during troubled times ["De Sint-Willibrord zag het al voorbijgaan. De oude Sint-Willibrord bezat een merkwaardige, hardstenen doopvont, die men thans in de nieuwe kerk kan bewonderen. Zij is versierd met vier primitief bewerkte koppen, die Assyrisch aandoende baarden dragen. Ze wordt Karolingisch genoemd, maar we zagen haar ook als 13e- en 15e-eeuws aangeduid, wat nogal enig verschil uitmaakt. Soortgelijke exemplaren worden gevonden te Horssen in het Land van Maas en Waal, te Fulda in Duitsland en te St.-Oedenrode. Deze laatste is uit Lage Mierde afkomstig, zegt pastoor J. v.d. Meijden, die ook meent, dat die van Horssen en St.-Oedenrode jonger dan de Middelbeerse zijn. Volgens een plaatselijke legende werd de doopvont in troebele tijden in de grond begraven. Dat duidt er op, dat men haar toen reeds als een waardevol bezit beschouwde. Zij moet thans het oudste historische stuk uitmaken, dat Middelbeers rijk is."] A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 10 April 2024) adds: "In Oostelbeers, there are two lonely church towers. The old tower stems from the oldest church, mentioned in 1207. However, the tower dates from 1300-1350. The church building was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. The tower a was preserved. The younger tower was built in 1893. The church was destroyed during the second world war. Only the tower remains. The present towerless church dates from 1934. The book "Geschiedenis van het Bisdom ’s Hertogenbosch", by Lud. Henr. Christian Schutjes, Volume 5, 1876, page 457, mentions : Oostelbeers : the church possesses a very old and well preserved baptismal font. My search for this font was fruitless. No one at Oostelbeers knows about this font."
