Font Notes:
An old baptismal font made of trachyte is noted and illustrated in Frieder Neher's Historischer Taufstein steht nun vor der Zonser Pfarrscheune, in the St Michael Dormagen parish site [https://www.st-michael-dormagen.de/aktuelles/news/detail/Historischer-Taufstein-steht-nun-vor-der-Zonser-Pfarrscheune/] [accessed 1 May 20204] informs on the installation of the old font outside the church in 3 December 2023. Historical baptismal font on display in front of the Zons parish barn. The return of a historic baptismal font was celebrated in Zons. It was owned by St. Martinus Church in the 1930s, was rediscovered some time ago by the historian Dr. Thomas Schwabach in the former Zonser restaurant “Torsschänke”. The baptismal font ended up there after it was given by the parish in 1935 to the local history museum, that was founded in the Rhine Tower. It is made of trachyte from Drachenfels, which can no longer be mined today, as archaeologist Dr. Marion Roehmer found out during her investigations on the stone. Thanks to a donation from Sparkasse Neuss, the baptismal font has now become the property of the association “Denkmalschutz Stadt Zons e.V”. From now on it is in the garden in front of the historic parish barn and can be seen by anyone interested. A small information board with the most important information about the baptismal font was attached to the wall. The city councilor Dr. Torsten Spillmann and Pastor Dr. Heribert Lennartz thanked all contributors to the project. The entire campaign was coordinated by the Monument Authority of the city of Dormagen.
