Deutscher Kunstverlag, Berlin und München 2008, ISBN 978-3-422-03092-3, S. 442]. The entry for this church in Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Tourismus GmbH [https://pages.destination.one/de/vogelsberg-touristik/streaming/detail/POI/213FAE824EC875E6EDE47A57C1AEBD60/kirche-hopfgarten-mit-taufstein] [accessed 27 April 2024] mentions a baptismal font here, one of the oldest of its kind in Germany, said to be associated with St. Boniface, who was a missionary in this area ["In dieser Kirche befindet sich ein Taufstein, der zu den ältesten seiner Art in Deutschland gehört. Dieser Taufstein wird in Zusammenhang mit dem hl. Bonifatius gebracht, der in dieser Gegend aktiv missioniert haben soll"]. The entry for this church in Kultuverein Hopgarted e.V. [https://www.schwalmtal-hopfgarten.de/hopfgarten/sehenswertes/] [accessed 27 April 2024] also remarks on the ancient font here which, together with the font in nearby Alsfeld, is one of the oldest in the area, and, like that one, decorated with scenes from the Life of Christ ["Ein ganz besonderes Stück Geschichte findet sich in unserer Kirche: der romanische Taufstein mit Reliefs aus dem Leben Christi ist ein frühromanisches Werk und mit dem Taufstein in Alsfeld, eines der einzig erhaltenen aus dieser Zeit"]. The entry for this church in GPS-Wanderatlas [https://www.ich-geh-wandern.de/schwalmtal-hessen] [accessed 27 April 2024] notes that the font here, made of 'Lungenstein' and similar to the one at Alsfeld, was restored in 1907; it is decorated with five scenes on its sides. The roughly cylindrical tub has a moulded uppr rim below which is an arcade of round arches on short columns; the arches are populated with figures and some are clearly meant to be scenes; comparing them to the font at Alsfeld one could try to identify the Baptism of Christ, where one figure's right hand rises closer to the other's head; the female beding down could represent the Samaritan at the Well, as in Alsfeld; the single figure holding a tall Latin cross could be Christ...]; this font may be from the same or a related workshop that produced the font at Alsfeld [cf. BSI entry]
