Country Name: Germany

Church Notes: a dependent hospital-cum-church of the 12thC Benedictine Abbey of Ilsenburg is documented in 1131; became Lutheran 1530; renovated 1870; tower added 1879
Font Notes:
Baptismal font of 1551 noted and illustrated in Sommer (1883); the font is shown as dodecagonal at the rim side but octagonal below, and with a rounded underbowl; there is a running inscription with Mark 16.16 text all around, and includes the date 1551 as well as the name of the donor. Noted and illustrated in the German Wikipedia entr for this church [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Marienkirche_Ilsenburg,_Taufstein] [accessed 20 April 2024] with an inscription that records the date, the name of the abbot and a text from Mark 16: 16: "Der Taufstein in der evangelischen Marienkirche in Ilsenburg trägt die Inschrift Qui crediderit et baptizatus fuerit salvus erit Anno Domini 1551 Theodericus Abbas – „Wer glaubt und getauft wird, wird gerettet werden [Markus 16, 16]. Im Jahr des Herrn 1551. Abt Theodericus [Dietrich Meppis, 1546–1560]“. The underbowl has a tracery pattern of large semicircles except in the area where a large shield charged with a crossed key and sword [Peter and Paul?] occupies the centre; next to it is an additional inscription inside one of the semicircles; the basin has a short part of its original base attached [or part of] to the underbowl; it appears to suggest a square pedestal base with four outer constructional pillars and a central square shaft; insted, the base now looks suspiciously like an upside down font basin.
