Font Notes:
The entry for this church in the Evangelischer Kirchenkreis Eisenberg [https://www.kirchenkreis-eisenberg.de/gemeinden/kahla/stadtkirche-st-margarethen/] [accessed 19 April 2024] informs on its baptismal font as being probably from Scharfenberg Castle near Thal (near Eisenach); the basin is of the 12th century, as suggested by the frieze of horshoe arch-heads, such as those found in the baptismal font in Merenberg in the Westerwald or on the apse of the Frauenberg Church in Nordhausen, both from the 12th century; the font is relatively large and has a drain; the base and the wrought iron cover date from 1955; the baptismal dish and jug are from 1956 ["Der Taufstein stammt wahrscheinlich aus der Burg Scharfenberg bei Thal (bei Eisenach). The basin is actually polygonal [decagonal? / dodecagonal?] with a rounded underbowl; although eroded and damaged the side panels show carved horseshoe arch-heads on them; some of the damage to the upper rim area appears to be related to the anchorings of a former font cover; the pedestal base is a modern replacement. The entry for this church in the German Wikipedia [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Margarethen_(Kahla)] [accessed 19 April 2024] notes a baptismal font of the 12th century on loan in this church from the Thüringen museum ["Taufstein aus dem 12. Jahrhundert (Leihgabe des Thüringer Museums in Eisenach)"]
