Church Notes: original chapel/church perhaps a pre-700 royal domain; small chapel-of-ease dedicated to St Martin documented in a 1129 papal bull; re-built several times;
Font Notes:
The presence of a baptismal font in this church and the rights of baptism are confirmed in Matthys & Hossey (1971); they confirm that a royal Merovingian chapel existed here; that it later became a rural chapel-of-ease mentioned in a bull by pope Honorius II in 1129; that it exercised several parochial functions, including receiving the tithe, the dispensation of sacraments, "en particulier le <> - ce qui est prouvé par la présence de fonts baptismaux et d' un cimetière"; that in 1722 these rights were confirmed by making the chapel a "bénéfice écclésiastique au profit d'un vicaire", only to be demolished and re-built closer to the centre of the hamlet in 1754; this new church was in turn demolished and a new one built, again on a new site but just a few meters appart; this latter church was restored in 1968. [NB: we have no further information on the medieval font or its whereabouts].
