Church Notes: a parish here is first documented in 886; again in 1097; not known when the first church was built; a church adjacent to an earlier building in the 16thC; restored 1736; tower re-built 1895
The local magazine Le Vivier aux joyaux, No. 28 (1999) [https://www.tintigny.be/loisirs/culture/cercle-dhistoire-locale/1999-09-numero-28.pdf] [accessed 1 April 2024] illustrates two objects of our interest: on the cover [cf. ImagesArea] is a drawing of a baptismal scene about t take place; an officiating priest assisted by two altar boys stand with a woman carrying a baby in arms next to a cabinet containing a round and flat container with a cover; the scene is captioned: "Anciens fonts baptismaux de l'église de Tintigny" [cf. infra for the listing of this object in KIK-IRPA]. On p. 16 of the same publication is a reference to E. Liegéois' description and illustration in the Annales de l'Institut Archéologique d'Arlon (1874, p. 202) of an early baptismal font of Tintigny, a font that disappeared at about the time of the reconstruction of the tower [1895]; the font is described as vase-shaped and made of bronze, decorated with three heads and an inscription in Gothic lettering ["Une formule évoquant Jésus, les fruit des entrailles de la Vierge Marie"] on the sides; the base consisted of three couchant animals; the font is dated to the 12th or 13th century; the same source suggests it may have been buried in the foundations of the restored tower in 1895. The drwing provided in the source shows an object reminiscent of the many bronze holy-water stoups made in France in the Gothic period; its decoration, however, is rather original. The round and flat container shown in the baptismal scene in Le Vivier... is actually listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10054100] [accessed 1 April 2024] as a portable font: "fonts baptismaux -- fonts portatifs [...] laiton martelé [...] hauteur: 12 cm; longueur: 39 cm; largeur: 24 cm [...] Date: 1801 - 1900" [NB: this object looks very much like the metal inserts found often in stone fonts; the description as 'portable font' would be rather ill-suited for an object only twelve cm. tall, with any water falling easily off it during its transportaion].
