Baptismal font listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10010745] [accessed 5 March 2024]: "fonts baptismaux [...] lierre calcaire [...] Date: 1501 - 1600 [...] hauteur: 122 cm".
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 25 October 2023) on the font at Flensburg Sankt-Johanniskirche, he notes: "The font of Attre, église Saint-Martin, seems almost identical" [i.e., in general shape, without the inscriptions and the added statues of the base] [cf. BSI entry for Flensburg No. 6]
A further communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 29 October 2025) adds: "Attre, église Saint-Martin. The destruction of the archives of the province of Hainaut in 1940 by the German bombardment of the city of Mons, means that much historical information about the area is lost.
According to legend, the Vikings built a tower in Attre. The Vignou tower is said to be the last remnant of this construction [...] Vignou Tower served as the keep of a square castle flanked by square corner towers. Depending on the sources, the foundation of this fortress must be situated between the 9th and the 12th century. The earliest preserved documents about a castle of Attre date from the 14th century. Attre is first mentioned in 1112, it was originally just a hamlet of the village of Arbre. In 1136, Bishop Liétard of Cambrai gave the altar of Attre and its dependencies of Arbre and Mévergnies to the Abbey of Liessies, a donation confirmed by Pope Alexander III on January 14, 1180. The present church building dates from 1780. Several religious objects from the 16th century have been preserved. Nothing is known about earlier churches. A separate lord's chapel is attached to the choir. The limestone, Hainaut-type, baptismal font is from the 16th century. https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10010745".
