A description of this church by Janne Thomassen Küster an St. Johannis [https://altstadt-flensburg.de/pdf/vortrag_stjohannis_de.pdf] [accessed 4 March 2024] notes that the octagonal baptismal font was donated by Harder Vake, a city councillor, bears inscriptions with texts from Matt. 28,19 and Mark. 16,16, and that the statues of the Four Evangelists were a later addition ["Der Taufstein wurde der Kirche von einem flensburger Ratsherren, Harder Vake, gegeben. Er ist achteckig und trägt zwei Bibelzitate, Matth. 28,19 und Mark. 16,16. Der Taufstein wird von den vier Evangelisten getragen, die später als Unterstützung beigefügt wurden"]. The entry for this church in the German Wikipedia [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanniskirche_(Flensburg)] [accessed 4 March 2024] mentions an octagonal baptismal font from 1592 with four statues of the Four Evangelists ["Der Taufstein in achteckiger Kelchform stammt aus dem Jahr 1592. Er zeigt vier Statuen, die die vier Evangelisten: Matthäus, Markus, Lukas und Johannes symbolisieren sollen"]. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (25 October 2023) notes: "This font looks very much like a Hainaut-type Renaissance font, of which you can find hundreds more to the west of Belgium. The limestone come from quarries around Arquennes, Feluy, Ecaussines, Maffle, etc… The font of Attre, église Saint-Martin, seems almost identical. The same is true for some other fonts in Denmark (Flynder) and the north of Germany (Tating, Vollerwiek, Katharinenheerd, Odenbüll, Nordstrand, Schobüll, Hollingstedt, Bergenhusen, Friedrichstadt (St. Christopherus)). Always referred to as “Namur”, but I think they are “Hainaut-type”. I have no idea yet how they ended up in this region. It could be by immigrant workers from Belgium and the Netherlands that helped rebuild the area after severe flooding [...] Sometimes these fonts carry mason’s marks, and can be attributed to “quarry masters”. I have been able to identify some."
