Listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10033] [accessed 28 January 2024] as a baptismal font made of metal: "Date: 1526 - 1550"; metal cover of 1910; total height of 199 cm includes the cover. Renaissance baptismal font of the second quarter of the 16th century reported in the Dutch Wikipedia entry for this church [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk_(Diest)] [accessed 28 January 2024] ["een renaissancedoopvont (tweede kwart 16e eeuw)"]. The round basin is decorated with several patterns and has four animal heads protruding at 90-degree angles; the pedestal base has three sections; the two upper onse are filled with a variety of scenes, figures, motifs and symbols, and framed at the corners with stylised columns; the lower section is very short and splays out onto a moulded lower base; on a short square stone plinth. The font cover, also of metal but of a later date [cf. supra] appears now altered from its 1940s appearance, the statue of the Madonna and Child free of the other peripheral decoration.
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 25 August 2023) notes: "The Church of Our Lady is the oldest church of the city of Diest and has a history that spans more than 8 centuries. As early as 1211, it is mentioned as a private castle chapel. The lords stayed in a nearby fortification (demolished in 1512) on a hill. In 1253 it was elevated to a parish church. The growth of Diest made the chapel too small. Renovation works were started and in 1288 the early Gothic church was completely consecrated. Throughout its more than 800 years of existence, the floor plan of the church has undergone many changes. In the sixteenth century the church had a hard time. When Protestant insurgents conquered the city, the building was reduced to a horse stable and depot. She was completely looted. All the metal was stolen. In 1580, after the robbery of building materials, the tower collapsed, shattering the roof and vault of the nave of the church. In 1602 the reconstruction of the tower and the nave started, but the building always gave problems due to technical defects. The new tower was never finished. There was repeated hesitation between tearing down and restoring. She will be taken out of service and a new function will be sought for the building that is in high need of repair. One of the oldest items in the church is a brass baptismal font that dates from 1530 and show the characteristic features from the period of transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance period. It is a second-hand font, bought in 1630 from the land dean of Scherpenheuvel, to replace the older font that was lost during the Calvinistic iconoclasm."
