A late-15th century grain measure originally from the Commanderie de La Neuville-au-Temple is reported and illustrated in Berland (1913) as having been used as a baptismal font in the parish church at Dampierre-au-Temple, and later moved to the musée de Châlons: "Il s'agit donc ici d'une mesure à grains de la commainderie de La Neuvile-au-Teniple, et nous ne croyons pas trop nous écarter de la vérité en plaçant à la fin du xv' siècle l'époque de sa construction." Berland (ibid.) argues that the stone measure was likely discarded from its original use in the mill when lighter copper measures were introduced ["La commanderie de La Neuville utilisa donc dès la fin du XVe siècle, au plus tard dès le début du XVI, les mesures de cuivre ; elle en généralisa de plus en plus l'emploi, et c'est à cet abandon des massifs boisseaux de pierre qu'on a dû la transformation en fonts baptismaux de notre mesure à grains"]. Berland (ibid.) notes also that evidence located in the upper rim of the vessel confirms its use as baptismal font; there are drilled holes use for the metal anchorings that held the prescribed font cover in place. This information is picked up and reproduced in A study of the Commanderie de La Neuville-au-Temple, in Études réalisées sur les Templiers [https://www.templiers.net/etudes/index.php?page=la-neuville-au-temple] [accessed 6 January 2024] notes and illustrates a stone grain measure, the only material witness that remains from the Commanderie, later installed in the church of Dampierre-au-Temple as baptismal font, before its present location at the museum in Châlons ["L'unique témoin matériel de la Neuville est une mesure à grains retrouvée hors contexte archéologique, utilisée comme fonts baptismaux dans l'église de Dampierre-au-Temple. (J. Berland, Une ancienne mesure à grains de la commanderie de la Neuville-au-Temple, Châlons-sur-Marne, A. Robat, 1913). Cette mesure en pierre, à double cuve ornée de croix de Malte, est aujourd'hui conservée au musée de Châlons"]. As noted in the sources there are four Templar's crossed on the vessel; below them, and about the middle of the cylinder runs a thick rope moulding that coils around one of the pillars on the side, and ends in a complex knot on another; the substantial circular knobs that would facilitate the vertical rotation of the vessel are decorated with Templar's crosses.
