Baptismal font made of Pirna sandstone in 1597, probably by Michael Schwenke; restored and provided with new cover in 2016; it may have been intended originally for the main Protestand church in Bautzen, the Dom St. Petri, but circumstances led it to end in St. Michael's. The font consists of three parts: a hexagonal basin decorated with oblong cartouches in a foliage background on the six panels; the next section down, a separate block also hexagonal, has a cerub in a foliage background on each panel; the hexagonal pedestal base, has a shallow niche on each side with seated putti sharing fruits with each other; the lower end of the base. still part of the same block, is moulded. The modern cover is a low dome of 2016 [cf. supra] [NB: we could not corroborate it in the photographs available but the date 1597 is probably inscribed in one of the cartouches on the basin side].
