An altar incorporating a baptismal basin is listed and illustrated in the Bildindex der Kunst & Architektur [http://id.bildindex.de/thing/0001227749] [accessed 20 December 2023]: made of albaster/marble after 1560 by Wilhelm Vernucken, (Werkstatt), Bildhauer, Hofbildhauerwerkstatt unter Leitung von Wilhelm Vernuken; an insert basin and a cover were originally in place but habeen lost since the Napoleonic period ["Mensa auf mit feinem Roll- und Beschlagwerk geziertem, taufsteinähnlichem Sockel, die vier Kanten der Mensa zusätzlich gestützt durch die Evangelistensymbole (Löwe, Adler, Stier und freistehender, knabenhafter Engel). In der Flucht des Sockels in die Altarplatte Vertiefung für Taufschale (Durchmesser 48 cm.) mit Randrille für Abdeckung. Schale und Deckel seit der Napoleonischen Zeit abgängig. Geringfügige Abschlagungen an den Evangelistensymbolen vermutlich schon durch rituell verrichtete bilderstürmerische Akte nach Einführung des Calvinismus in der Landgrafschaft 1608"]. The Bildindex entry [cf. supra] gives "Laske, Friedrich/ Gerland, Otto: Schloß Wilhelmsburg. Dresden 1895, bes. S. 24. Handy, Peter: Schloß Wilhelmsburg Schmalkalden. Schmalkalden/ Erfurt 1988, S. 29ff." as sources. The altar table has a central pedestal decorated with Renaissance patterns, and is further supported by large Evangelists' symbols at the corners. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 7 April 2023) refers to Max Lewy, Schloss Hartenfels bei Torgau, 1908, Beiträge zur Bauwissenschaft, Heft 10, Verlag von Ernst Wasmuth, Berlin, and notes: "It was customary in Reformed Churches to place a portable baptismal font on the altar to administer the sacrament of baptism. The castle chapel at Schmalkalden, where altar and baptismal font are combined in one piece of furniture, testifies of the fact that altar and baptismal font were considered to be of equal liturgical value."
