The entry for this church in the German Wikipedia [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtkirche_St._Georg_(Schmalkalden)] [accessed 20 December 2023] informs that the baptismal font in this church dates from 1560, replacing the earlier one; it was installed in te chancel ["Der Taufstein wurde im Jahr 1560 geschaffen und im Chorraum aufgestellt"]. The font consists of an octagonal basin with very sharp protruding mouldings sandwiching the side panels; seven of these are painted with Biblical scenes, including a Crucifixion, while the eighth contains an inscription; the pedestal base is also octagonal, with inscribed panels on the sides except where missing; moulded lower base, also octagonal. The wooden cover is an octagonal dome with painted panels; it is raised and lowered on a pulley system.
