Font Notes:
A newspaper report by Thomas Tominski in the 25 October 2021 edition of the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung [https://www.mz.de/lokal/jessen/kirche-der-sensationen-3266583] [accessed 12 December 2023], informs of the sensational chance discovery of a ca. 850-years-old baptismal font of stone by children playing hide-and-seek in the yard; the font was unearthed with the help of the local fire brigade, and was placed inside the church, by the entranceway ["dass nach dem Unterricht Versteckspielen im Garten auf dem Programm gestanden hat. Der merkwürdige Stein entpuppt sich nach der Freilegung als ein etwa 850 Jahre altes Taufbecken, das mit Hilfe der örtlichen Feuerwehr ans Licht befördert worden ist und jetzt im Eingangsbereich des Gotteshauses betrachtet werden kann"]. The entry for this church in the Evangelische Kirchenkreis Wittenberg EKM [https://www.kirchenkreis-wittenberg.de/kirchenkreis/gemeinden-und-kirchen/seyda/gentha/evangelische-dorfkirche/] [accessed 12 December 2023] reports a 1000-year old font ["1000jähriger Taufstein"] in it. This old font, probably from an earlier church, is noted in Ute Essegern's Erinnerungskultur in Pfarrkirchen Hedwig von Dänemark (1581–1641), die Familie von Kanne und die Kirche zu Gentha [768-Artikeltext-545-1-10-20211230.pdf] [accessed 12 December 2023] as a one thousand-years old baptismal font found in the year 2000 ["Möglicherweise gab es einen Vorgängerbau, denn zur Kirche gehört auch ein zweiter romanischer Taufstein, der erst im Jahr 2000 vor der Kirche entdeckt wurde"]. The badly damaged and eroded stone font consists of a chalice-shaped basin with a broad flat moulding at the upper octagonal rim, and around splaying base that appears totally plain.
