The font at Øster Alling is listed in Mackeprang's (1941) broad grouping of De østjydske løvefonte, in a subsection which he labels as "fire profilløver". Noted and illustrated in Søren Kaspersen's Jyske fonte med modstillede løver.[1] Et præliminært studie, 17.8.2016 klo 23.15 | Tieteelliset artikkelit | TAHITI 04/2016 [https://tahiti.journal.fi/article/view/85640/44590] [accessed 21 November 2023] describes the font at Øster Alling church as having on it four heads that are relatively small and most likely represent the man in the act of baptism; one of the heads is flanked by two opposing lions with exceedingly long protruding tongues ending in large acanthus leaves; the tongues frame and almost form a bed for the head, and the regenerative character of the outstretched tongue can hardly be expressed more clearly; behind those a head is seen being attacked by a small dragon's head, which terminates the raised tail of the first of two right-facing lions occupying the western half of the basin; this lion also acts as a protector of the head to the west by also having a long protruding acanthus leaf tongue, and it thus illustrates how good and evil are woven into each other in the baptism process, which here also seems to start towards the north ["På Øster Alling–fonten ses også fire hoveder, men de er alle forholdsvis små og repræsenterer snarest mennesket i dåbshandlingen.[56] Et af hovederne er flankeret af to modstillede løver med overmåde langt udhængende tunger, der ender i store akantusblade. Noted in Erik Skov, in Trap Danmark [https://trap5.lex.dk/sogn/oester-alling-sogn-soenderhald-herred/] [accessed 21 November 2023], after Mackeprang [cf. supra], and a baptismal dish of the 16th century ["Romansk granitdøbefont m. løvefig. (Mackeprang.D. 277). Dåbsfad af sydty. type fra 1500t"]. Baptismal font described and illustrated in the Norddjurs Vestre Pastorat [https://www.norddjursvestrepastorat.dk/velkommen-til-norddjurs-vestre-pastorat-0/oster-alling] [accessed 21 November 2023]: a baptismal font made of coarse granite; the basin decorated with three lions with tongues out and foliated tails; one of which is about to devour one of the three human heads between the animals [cf. Kaspersen's description supra]; the original base was found in 1965 badly damaged among farm debris; on it are a horse, a bird and a lion somewhat similar to the ones on the basin ["Døbefonten er af svær granit og stod oprindeligt nederst i skibet nær indgangene.
