Church Notes: 12th-13thC chalkstone church;
Described and illustrated in Hein (1966) as a granite baptismal font attributed to Horder. The basin is rougly cylindrical with a rounded underbowl; the upper rim is ornamented with rope motif; the basin sides are ornamented with two parallel bands of acanthus vine; the underbowl ends in a rope motif, which is also the motif on the upper rim of the base; below it, the base becomes square and its sides are ornamented with incised lines that delineate the shape; the vertical arrises have rope motif ornamentation. The entry for this church in VisitAarhus [https://www.visitaarhus.com/aarhus-region/plan-your-trip/hammelev-church-gdk605777] [accessed 18 November 2023] reports a Romanesque granite font decorated with with double ropes as one of Hord's finest. The granite font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a rope moulding at each end, the side between are covered with two parallel vines in low relief; raised on a round-to-square base, a rope moulding at the upper end, whilc the sides are framed in straight incised lines; small rope motif at the four corners. No cover present.
