Holohlavy No. 1

Josef Matějka's Kamenné křtitelnice v okrese Jaroměřském [http://www.smirice.eu/okoli/krtitel/krtitel.htm] [accessed 26 September 2023] reports on an 1880 report by Alois Nývlt, dean and episcopal vicar secretary, in which he describes a large stone font standing outside the west entranceway to the church; he writes that the font must have existed before the metal one was installed inside the church in 1552, perhaps, he muses, since the beginning of Christianity in the area; dean Nývlt further states that he had a stone cover made for the font in 1880. The measurements of the font are included in Matějka's article ["Paměti děkana Nývlta: „Kdo vchází hlavními dveřmi do chrámu, spatří tu na levé straně u venkovní zdi velkou 9 křtitelnici z hrubého kamene, v podobě kalicha, o které se dá souditi, že před rokem 1552, kdy nynější cínová křtitelnice do kostela přišla, stála v chrámu Páně snad od prvopočátku křesťanství ve zdejší krajině. Po staletí byla bez víka, dešti, sněhu a všem nepohodám povětrnosti vystavena, až jsem ji v roce 1880 kamenným víkem přikrýti dal. Alois Nývlt, děkan a biskupský vikářský tajemník“ Celková výška s víkem je 95 cm, původní křtitelnice má jen 62 cm, kalich začíná ve výšce 28 cm, obvod nohy je 170 cm, kalich má obvod 254 cm."] [NB: despited the dean's claims to the possible age of the font, the church itself is documented in 1357, there fore it is quite likely that the font belonged to that church -- the stone lid installed on the font in 1880 is very large and heavy, its purpose obviously to protect the basin, not to be lifted on and off].
