INFORMATION

FontID: 24942GDA
Church/Chapel: Kościół św. Katarzyny / Katharinenkirche
Church Patron Saints: St. Catherine of Alexandria [aka Katherine, Katharine]
Church Location: Wielkie Młyny 1, 80-849 Gdańsk, Poland
Country Name: Poland
Location: Pomorskie
Directions to Site: Located off (N) highway E77, on the S shore of the Gulf of Gdansk, about 22 km SE of Gdynia -- The church is located in the Gdańsk Stare Miasto, between highway 91 (W) and the Motława (E)
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in a wooden octagonal baptistery
Century and Period: 16th century, Renaissance
Church Notes: church started 1220s, with many later modifications and re-buldings; major fires in 1905 and 2006; restored thereafter
The present baptismal font in this church consists of an octagonal basin with a hemispherical underbowl laso of eight panels, raised on a short pedestal base, octagonal as well; the narrow sides of the upper basin, below a prominent moulding are decorated with floral and foliage in the form of a running garland; at the arrises of the underbowl are the characteric demi-figures of Renaissance furnishings, the upper half human, male and female, the lower in the shape of architectural pedestals; one of them has been lost and not replaced; at the centre ring is a band of mostly geometrical motifs, while the short pedestal base has an arcade of eight round arches. The font cover mirrors the shape of the basin, plianer though, and it is a terrible state; at the finial it has a ring connector to a pulley somewhere up in the ceiling, but it looks like it has not been used in a long time. The whole is located in an octagonal wooden construction which is open at the top, and looks like it has been designed as a baptistery.
