Der Taufstein in der Altstädter Bartholomäuskirche [Der Taufstein in der Bartholomäuskirche zu Hachenburg-Altstadt - regionalgeschichte.net] [accessed 19 September 2023] informs: late-Romanesque Rhenish baptismal font made of basalt ca. 1230; it consists of a roughly hemispherical basin with a broad vine carved all around, the underbowl decorated with twelve broad concave ribs or arches all around; the basin is suspended on six outer colonnettes with capitals and bases, and a broad hexagonal base in the centre; the whole is raised on a circular plinth. The baptismal font stood in the church until 1606 but was removed, together with other liturgical furnishings under the reformed Count Wilhelm von Wittgenstein; it then served as a cattle trough in the vicarage for 250 years, eventually making its way back into the church in 1864; its position inside the church has changed several times since, ending up in its current place on the west side in the 1958 renovations. The present baptismal dish of bronze was made by Professor Hanns Wolf Spemann from Wiesbaden ["Der spätromanische rheinische Taufstein aus Mendiger Basalt wurde um 1230 in der Andernacher Bauhütte hergestellt.
