Font Notes:
A communication from Pol Herman (e-mail of 1 November 2022) informs: "Mosan limestone font dated 1647. This is a very late example of the four heads, that are so typical for Romanesque and Gothic Mosan fonts, being represented. The lid has an inscription : JEAN+FAYS+MAT+FAICT+FAIRE+L’AN 1682". "Érigée au milieu du village, l'église Saint-Georges de Noduwez est un édifice d'origine romane qui fut modifié à diverses reprises. La tour romane en quartzite d'Overlaere, carrée et très massive, date de la deuxième moitié du XIIe siècle. Fonts baptismaux datés de 1647. La cuve circulaire est ornée de quatre têtes saillantes. Le fût est bombé et la base du support d’abord quadrangulaire devient ensuite bombée et moulurée." [NB;: source of the French text not given] A later communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 3 November 2022) added: "A font almost identical to Noduwez is in the église Saint-Martin at Wasseiges. Or more correctly : an almost identical basin. http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10002415 KIK-IRPA : 1501-1600. Distance between both churches is 14 km. Comparing the fonts, I believe that the font of Wasseiges is fully authentical : it is the correct column for the basin. And now, I start to think that the font at Noduwez is composite : the column and base are later than the basin. This makes me doubt about the dating 1647 for Noduwez. Because I read that the inscription 1647 is on the column, I suspect that this is the date that the older basin was installed on a more recent column/base. The Noduwez basin will be 16th century ?"
