The entry for this church in the Kirchgemeinde Döben-Höfgen, Nerchau [http://www.kirche-nerchau.de/02_kgdh/kihoe.php] [accessed 10 August 2023] shows a historic timetable ["Zeittafel"] with the dates related to the church starting with 1100 for the original wooden chapel ["Hölzerne Kapelle"] that would be replaced ca. 1250 with the stone church; in fifth position on the table is the entry for the present font: "1368 Taufstein aus Rochlitzer Porphyr gotisches Maßwerk" [NB: we are not sure where the precise date of 1368 comes from]. Noted in the Wikipedia entry for this church [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrkirche_Höfgen] [accessed 10 August 2023] as a baptismal font made of Rochlitz porphyry in the 14th century ["Der Taufstein aus dem 14. Jahrhundert wurde aus Rochlitzer Porphyrtuff gefertigt."] The font consists of an octagonal basin with a prominent moulding at the upper rim, the curved sides decorated with trefoiled tracery all around; there is damage to the upper rim probably related to the metal anchorings for an earlier cover; raised on a hexagonal pdedestal base with windows on the sides, and a moulded hexagonal lower base. The font may date to the mid-15th century expansion of this church. Wooden cover painted with donnor information and date.
