Walkenried No. 2

Noted and illustrated in Schulin (2021) as a former piscina or lavabo from the Cistercian abbey at Walkenried that was installed as baptismal font in the newly instituted parish church in what had been the chapter house of the old abbey ["Das Taufbecken in Walkenried diente zunächst, nämlich bis 1570, als Piscinum bzw. Lavabo in der Kirche des ehemaligen Zisterzienserklosters, wo – mangels gleichzeitiger Pfarrkirchen-Funktion – wahrscheinlich kein Taufbecken vorhanden war. Nach Auflösung des Klosters und Umwandlung des früheren Kapitelsaals in eine Gemeindekirche 1570 wurde dann das Piscinum als Taufbecken verwendet (derartige Funktionsänderungen findet man immer wieder)" [NB: the comment Schulin makes about there probably not being a font in the abbey -because it did not have parochial functions- is debatable, as most monastery houses own a font anyway to confirm with the ecclesiastical liturgies related to the blessing of the water in Holy Week. Furthermore, a font of bronze in the abbey church is documented [cf. BSI entry for Walkenried No. 1]. Die Piszine ist architektonisch durchgestaltet, der Schaft einem Bündelpfeiler nachempfunden.
