We have learned about two objects that appear to be associated with the church in Gortanumera: one is illustrated in Irish Dominican Photographers [https://www.flickr.com/photos/feargal/5185730032/in/photostream/] [accessed 31 July 2023], a square vessel that, as far as we know, has not been identified by anyone as a font or stoup; it is shown in the source in the ruins of the old St Michael's church in 2010. The other object is a font described and illustrated in Christy Cunniffe in Galway Community Heritage (21 September 2016) [https://field-monuments.galwaycommunityheritage.org/content/archaeology/fonts/lickmolassy-baptismal-font-2] [accessed 31 July 2023]: "This large octagonal baptismal font is preserved in the porch of Gortanummera church Portumna. It reputedly originated in Goratcooheen post-Emancipation church. It is executed in limestone and is in three individual sections: bowl, pedestal and base. Both the bowl and base have a decorative moulding while the pedestal is plain. It has a rather old appearance and is likely to be of eighteenth-century date but could also be earlier perhaps as early as the seventeenth century. It is difficult to date material such as this." The limestone font consists of three sections: basin, pedestal base and moulded lower base, all three octagonal. No cover present.
