Church Notes: church dedicated to St Mary mentioned in 615 AD; confirmed episcopal church mid-8thC; 1052 cathedral church collapsed; re-building started soon thereafter but not completed until 1378; modified 15th, 16thC; became parochial 1821; restored 20th and 21stC
Baptismal font made of red marble, consisting of a hexagonal moulded basin decorated with large cherub heads and rosettes around the sides and underbowl; raised on a moulded pedestal base with standing figures [putti?] and a moulded lower base, both also hexagonal; the lower base has an addtion on the side, octagonal and moulded, a standing step for the priest. Boxy wooden cover with moulded sides, also hexagonal; orb-and-cross finial.
