Church Notes: four churches and a monastery were documented in Prenzlau by 1250; present church erected 1289-1340 using materials from an earlier church of 1235-1250; modified several times since; restored 19thC; burnt down by the Red Army April 1945; restored 1970 and 1995; restored 2018-2021
Studied and illustrated in a thesis submitted to the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin: Das Taufbecken der St. Marien-Kirche Prenzlau. Materialtechnische Untersuchungen, Konservierung und Rekonstruktion eines in der St.-Nikolai-Kirche Prenzlau befindlichen bronzenen Taufbeckens des Spätmittelalter, in 1998 [copy of thesis requested to institute 9 July 2023 by mt/bsi]. Baptismal font of bronze consisting of a round tapering basin decorated with an arcade of crocketed Gotic arches populated by figures dressed in different attires and some holding different objects; the base consists of a central supprt, a round stem with three parallel roll mouldings, and three outer figures with additional heads, set at 120-degree angles; the figures are portrayed as a youth, a grown man and an old man, each of whom has a corresponding head at his feet: the youth a pig's head, the grown man a lion's, the old man a monkey's [the human figures perhaps an allusion to Aristotle's three ages of man? the three animal heads as symbols of their character?] [NB: earlier drawings and photographs show that the lower base heads were originally full protomes [cf. ImagesArea] and that the font rested on their backs; it now, after the 2022 restoration, rests directly on the ground]. One good source for information on the origin of the font and the translation of the font from St Nikolaikirche to St Marienkirche was found in KULTURTIPP [http://kulturtipp.trendresistent.com/category/uckermark/page/10/] [accessed 9 July 2023]. [NB: some source documents inform that the font was originally in Marienkirche but, when this church was damaged in WWII, the font was moved to Nikolaikirche, until the re-building of Marienkirche; it was finally re-installed in Marienkirche in 2022].
