The present holy-water stoup is a fragment of what is believed to have been a former Roman sarcophagus of marble converted into a holy-water stoup in the Middle Ages [source: "Kath. The stoup, shown to be a fragment of a much larger monument, is rectangular inside and out; it is decorated with foliated motifs around the upper rim, and other motifs, and shows part of the legs of a person, as well as a portion of an inscription on the sides; its wooden cover is fixed to anchoring points on the upper rim [cf. ImagesArea], which may suggest that it was used [or meant to be] as a font at some point.
