Church Notes: ruins of the old church of St. Martin; originally 11thC(?); modified 16thC; -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00110340]: "Ruines de l'église du Vieux Saint-Martin
A baptismal font of stone stands in the ruins of the Eglise Saint-Martin de Saint-Martin-le-Vieux; the font consists of an ocatgaonal basin with vertical side, a rounded underbowl and an octagonal-to-square base; it is no clear now what carving, if any, decorated the basin sides, but the underbowl shows traces of a graded patterns all around. The original church is dated to the 11th century, with 16th-century re-building, in Marie Lebert's L'art roman dans la baie du Mont Saint-Michel (2006) [http://www.etudes-francaises.net/avranchin/saint-martin.htm#eglise] [accessed 17 April 2023]: "L’église date certainement du 11e siècle. Ceci est attesté par les nombreux éléments d’opus spicatum, la porte au cintre surbaissé de la nef et les étroites petites baies au cintre creusé dans un linteau monolithe de granit. Le fait que l’église soit dédiée à Saint Martin est aussi une preuve d’ancienneté. L’église a été l’objet de remaniements postérieurs: percement de la baie géminée du chevet et des baies des murs sud du choeur et de la nef, édification d’un double campanile au 16e siècle."
The new parish church in Bréhal, Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance, is a modern, 19th-century building the furnishings of which are, according to the Wikimanche entry [https://www.wikimanche.fr/Église_Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance_(Bréhal)] [accessed 17 April 2023] all modern: "Tout le mobilier date du 18e ou 19e siècle : maître-autel, deux autels latéraux, bancs, chair à prêcher, fonts baptismaux et bénitier."
