Font Notes:
The entry for this church in Straße der Romanik [https://romanik-strasse-erleben.de/st-nikolai-burg-bei-magdeburg/] [accessed 24 January 2023] notes that the limestone baptismal font suffered such serious damage in the 18th century that restoration was impossible: "Der Taufstein aus Kalkstein erlitt im neunzehnten Jahrhundert schwere Schäden, woran jede Wiederherstellungsmaßnahme scheiterte" [NB: not clear whether the damaged and reconstruction comment is telated to this font or to the one listed in BSI as Bug bei Marburg No. 3]. A photograph of a restored Gotland font with heads below the rim appears in Flickr [https://www.flickr.com/photos/68282140@N04/27998419122] [accessed 24 January 2023] with the following caption: "Die zweite Taufe der Kirche, eine Steintaufe aus Gotländer Sandstein aus dem Übergang von der Romanik zur Gotik, war verschollen, wurde bei Ausschachtungsarbeiten in der Süderstraße entdeckt und 1928 wieder aufgestellt. Der Fuß wurde ersetzt. (Wiki)". The font consists of a quatrefoil-shaped basin characteristic of some of the Gothic fonts from Gotland, mounted on an equally-shaped pedestal base; what makes this font rarer is that there are four heads set in the confluence of the lobes on the basin, some of the heads being human, other(s) animal. No cover present.
