Church Notes: Roubais Saint-Martin listed in Mérimée [PA59000153]: "Cette église est le plus ancien édifice de la ville. En remplacement d'une église romane, on construisit au 15e siècle un édifice gothique à trois nefs, du type des hallekerques. Il fut doté ensuite d'une tour de façade, laissée inachevée en 1571. Au 19e siècle, l'essor de la ville dû à l'industrie textile, rendit nécessaire l'agrandissement de l'édifice. Les travaux, confiés à l'architecte Charles Leroy, introducteur du style néo-gothique dans le département, commencèrent en 1848 et s'achevèrent vers 1859. L'ancienne église disparaissait alors presque totalement sous l'oeuvre néo-gothique de type flamboyant. Les murs latéraux furent cassés pour la construction de deux nefs supplémentaires, et le choeur refait. De l'édifice original n'est conservé que la tour de façade et quelques colonnes de la nef. Le chantier mené de 1968 à 1978, permit la restauration intérieure de l'édifice ainsi que son réaménagement, qui s'accompagnait de la suppression du décor néo-gothique". -- Mérimée [ref.: PA00107928] lists also the 19thC church of Saint-Joseph: "Cette église a été édifiée en 1878 par l'architecte belge Jean-Baptiste, baron Béthune d'Ydewalle, pour le compte du patronat, dans l'intention de catéchiser les ouvriers."

Les fonts-baptismaux dateraient de 1824 .source http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roubaix"; the font shown in this source appears as a example of the Hainaut design, octagonal throughout and decorated with multiple mouldings; there does not seem to be any part of it of an earlier design or period; it is topped with a metal cover that has a large statue finial [NB: perhaps the date refers to the cover only, not the font?]. In a communication between Jean-Claude Ghislain and Pol Herman (e-mail of 22 April 2022) Ghislain wrote: "Voici quelques repères relatifs aux éléments de fonts baptismaux romans tournaisiens dont vous citez les noms de lieux [...] Robai semble en réalité correspondre à Roubaix (Nord) dans l'église : la base incorporée, comme la précédente, aux fonts actuels". Drake (2002) lists a Tournai font in Roubaix, which he places incorrectly in Belgium.
