Cognate Fonts: the font at Wilhelmshausen kei Kassel has several animals on the sides, real and fabulous
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to Pol Herman for bringing this font fragment to our attention and for his help in documenting it
The animal decoration on this font is studied in Wolfgang Gresky's Das Einhorn vom Medaillonteppich im Thuner Schlossmuseum und andere Schweizer Einhorn-Darstellungen, in Historisches Museum Schloss Thun 1968, where it is related to some such on a cloth antependium in the museum, on which are identified five figures: St Mauritius, the animal symbols for Mark and Matthew, a pelican plucking its chest and a unicorn. Gresky (ibid.) Identifies the eight encircled figures: "Die Tiere auf den acht Seiten des Amsoldinger Taufsteines: Osten: Hase Südost: Lamm Süden: Adler Südwest: Panther (nach Grütter: Löwe) Westen: zerstört, Bär (?) Nordwest: Hirsch Norden: Einhorn Nordost: Affe (oder Hund?)", [NB: note that the figure on the southeast side is given as a lamb, but it is an Agnus dei, haloed and bearing a cross -- also of note is the identification of the figure on the southwest side as a panther, when it has the mane of a lion that panthers do not have [Grütter, who rightly identifies the panther as a lion is fottnoted "Grütter (s. Literaturverzeichnis) S. 15/16 u n d A b b . S." [Grütter, M a x : Tausendjährige K i r c h e n am Thuner- u n d Brienzersee. Berner Heimatbücherei 66, Bern ^ 19]. Gresky further refers to the baptismal font at Wilhelmshaisen bei Kassel as one also with animals on its sides, both fabulous and real. The west side, now erased, is thought to have had a bear on it but, a bear being the heraldic animal for Bern, it was chiseled away by its enemies. This source further refers to the earlier font at Wilhelmshausen bei Kassel, that has an earlier version of animals on it; Wilhelmshausen is located in the same area.
