Listed in Sauermann (1904) as a baptismal font of the second half of the 15h century. Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with moulded sides raised on a an octagonal pdestal base decorated with mouldings as well. There is no cover at present but the upper rim shows evidence of early anchoring for a cover [cf. ImagesArea].
A communication from Pol Herman to BSI (e-mail of 12 July 2022) refers to Sauermann's description and dating [cf. supra] but finds other uncorroborated sources more accurate: "On the Internet, its description is better : The late Gothic baptismal font made of black marble was manufactured in Belgium. Black marble should be : limestone. It is Hainaut-style. On Internet, I read: "The baptismal font is of late Gothic-Frisian form and probably comes from Rörbeck, a place on the old "Strand" that perished in a storm surge in 1634. Many churches in our area have benefited from such "floating debris" from the sea. But the people of Rörbeck didn't make the stone themselves either: they had it made in Belgium. The black marble altar and baptismal font were found in the mudflats after the great flood of 1634. Both are said to come from the sunken island "Strand". I did not find the source of this claim. The church of Rörbeck, damaged by the flood of 1634, is said to have been demolished in 1638."
