Walther Zimmermann's Romanische Taufsteine am Niederrhein [annalen-1954-jg22.pdf] [accessed 4 September 2023] notes a group of baptismal fonts in the area that he labels "Rheinischer Typ des von Säulchen umstellten Kessels" of which type he gives the font at Sieglar as a sample; that font is very much of the same design as the one at Drolshagen. They are listed in a section of Zimmermann's paper under heading "Rheinische Gruppe aus Trachyt und Basaltlava". The font at Drolshagen is made of trachyte stone said to be from Siebengebirge in the 13th century, but its hexagonal design with six pillars supporting the outer angles of he basin and the concave ribs of the underbowl suggest a later date; besides the six outer pillars the base includes also a squat central shaft at the bottom of the undebowl; th side of the basin and the capitals of the outer columns are decorated with a foliage frieze. [NB: odd design for a font of the period in this area; see also the font at Friesenhagen]. Low dome metal cover with knob handle/finial; modern. A communication from Pol Herman to BSI included the following English version of the Wikipedia entry [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clemens_(Drolshagen)] [accessed 30 October 2022]: "It is said that Archbishop Anno II of Cologne consecrated the church between 1050 and 1075. The mighty tower was built in 1491 to complete the city fortifications of Drolshagen. The church was expanded as a Romanesque basilica in the course of the founding of the Drolshagen monastery and has remained almost unchanged in its form to this day. The baptismal font was erected in the 13th century. The baptismal font (13th century) is the oldest part of the parish church. It is located in the southern aisle apse. It is made from the trochyte rock of the Siebengebirge. Its height is 95 cm and its diameter is 110 cm. The actual basin, designed as a hemisphere, is supported by six columns. The edge is adorned with a surrounding frieze of foliage." Herman also provided BSI with a PDF copy of Zimmermann's article [cf. supra]
