A communication from Pol Hermand to BSI (e-mail of 29 June 2022) includes several sources and a photograph that identify the present 'font' at St. Martinus Pfarrkirche Pfalzdorf as a composite object that was originally from the Kloster Graefenthal [aka Monasterium Vallis Comites / Gut Graefenthal / Klooster Gravendaal]. 1.- "Another example of 17th century winecooler re-used as baptismal font. The church of Pfalzdorf was consecrated in 1811. There never was an older church. For the interior of the church, all furniture came from the Abbey Graefenthal at Asperden that fell victim to the secularisation in 1803. Napoleon hat conquered the area, and the French administration forced the Abbey to close down. The buildings were sold, but the interior furniture of the church was donated to the parish of Pfalzdorf, that was created on 16th of May 1804. See movie https://www.goch.tv/video/kirchenfuehrung-in-der-st-martinus-kirche-pfalzdorf-496/ and check site https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Graefenthal 2.- "The font is described as composite in „Die Kunstdenkmäler der Rheinprovinz, im Auftrage des Provinzialverbandes, herausgegeben von Paul Clemen, Erster Band, IV, Die Kunstdenkmäler des Kreises Kleve, Düsseldorf, Druck und Verlag van L. Schwann, 1892“, page 566 : The basin stood on a non-fitting column/base made of Namur limestone. Apparently this column/base has been replaced by a modern contraption. The basin could be marble from Belgium : “bleu belge de Golzinne”. 3.- A communication to Pol Herman from the Pfalzdorf parish (e-mail of 29 June 1922) provides some information on, and a view of the font: Sehr geehrter Herr Pol, anbei zwei Bilder von unserem Taufbecken und einen Textauszug aus der zuletzt veröffentlichten Chronik der Kirche St. Martinus in Goch Pfalzdorf. Weitere Informationen habe ich leider zu dem Taufstein nicht gefunden. Ich hoffe, Sie kommen damit zurecht. Gerne können Sie bei Gelegenheit auch vorbeikommen und sich selbst ein Bild machen. Die Kirche ist täglich von ca. 09.00 Uhr bis 16.00 Uhr geöffnet für jedermann. Mit freundlichen Grüßen vom Niederrhein. Pfarrbüro Pfalzdorf. Andrea Gutsfeld" 4.- A further note by Pol Herman to BSI from 5 July 2022 adds: "Michiel Dusar, of the geology department of the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences has identified the material of the basin as marble from Barbençon, also know as Brayelle. It was used primarily in the 17th century. This marble was also used for the lower parts of the columns of the baldaquin du Val-de-Grâce (1664) [https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Baldaquin_et_maître-autel_du_Val_de_Grâce.jpg] [accessed 29 October 2022]
